LUKE FAULKNER
Luke Faulkner is a Dublin based photographer, filmmaker and musician. His unique, multidisciplinary approach is a natural extension of his haphazard thought process and was born out of a love for the arts, popular culture and how they intersect. Whether through photography, design, video, performance or in songwriting, his practice acts as a vehicle in which to make sense of his own thoughts and emotions and a way of commenting on the world around him.
Luke studied BA (hons) Photography at IADT, Dun Laoghaire and graduated with first class honours in 2018. Heavily influenced by 20th century media and technology, Faulkner combines elements of the past with contemporary trends and ideas using a combination of analogue and digital methods. His continuous flirtation with this process leads to a common thread within his work of a need to understand the past to make sense of the present. His intention is never derivative though, always challenging himself to think outside of the box and to innovate.
Since 2016, Faulkner’s visual work has expanded into PureGrand, a solo pop music act which he writes, produces and creates visuals for himself. Over the course of several EPs, singles and an album, PureGrand’s vibrant pop sound paired with introspective lyrics acts a perfect sonic accompaniment to his visual work and the two practices are linked very closely, with every release being accompanied with artwork and/or music videos which are tied together with the music.
While often a one man show, Faulkner is a keen collaborator, and feels most fulfilled when able to share his vision with the talents of other artists.
At the centre of Faulkner’s practice is the belief that art should be accessible to all but also uncompromising and unpatronising. Luke wants to challenge the boundaries of what is “highbrow” and “lowbrow” and embrace camp as an authentic means of artistic expression.
